Of Flackton’s instrumental music, most interest attaches to his four sonatas for tenor violin (viola). In the preface to his op.2 sonatas (which were ‘inspected’ before publication by C.F. Abel) he stressed the claims of that neglected instrument and the need to increase its meagre repertory of solo music.
William Flackton was an 18th-century bookseller, publisher, amateur organist, viola player and composer. He is perhaps best known today for his compositions for the viola. Flackton was born in Canterbury and was the eldest surviving son of John Flackton and Catharine Sharp.

The very first English solo sonatas written specifically for the viola were published in 1770 by a little-known musician and bookseller by the name of William Flackton. Flackton’s express purpose was to encourage others to write for this unlikely solo instrument, as outlined in the preface to his Opus 2 publication of six solo sonatas of 1770:

Possibly for this reason, his viola sonatas seem to be his best-known works. His Op. 2 consisted of three sonatas for cello and three for viola (I assume Nos. 4, 5 and 6), but on publishing a second edition Flackton added a further sonata for each instrument.
